Raffaele Pisano (University of Lille, France) Two Carnots International Research Project (18th-19th C.)
What
- Pisano's Two Carnots International Research Project was born in 1990s at the University of Napoli Federico II, Italy. Numerous publications and events followed. Please follow this web-link
- The aim of this three-day International Colloquium is the Celebration of 200 years since the publication of the Sadi Carnot's Réflexions sur la puissance motrice du Feu, 1824–2024. It is hosted by the History of Physics and Applied Science & Technologies Team (HOPAST) at IEMN, France | Institute of Electronics, Microelectronics and Nanotechnology (IEMN), CNRS-University of Lille, France | LILLIAD Learning Center Innovation, University of Lille, France. Patronage by French Académie des sciences and also granted by SabiX, Fondation Carnot et al. In particularl the aim is to bring together new research (studies–&–perspectives) from history, mathematics and physics et al. to explore the context of Sadi Carnot and his publication, increasing our understanding of the subjetc.
Theme
- Celebration of 200 years since the publication of Sadi Carnot's Réflexions sur la puissance motrice du Feu, 1824–2024.
- The IEMN Research Centre, LILLIAD venue and all Partners in and of itself supports the theme of the international conference.
- 1824-1974/150th CNRS-Academy of Science-X, Paris, 11-13 Juin | 1824-2024/200th HOPAST-IEMN, University of Lille, 11-13 September
Outline & Aim
- It is recognized that science is an important component of EU cultural heritage, and provides the most important explanations of the material world. Recently fewer youth seem to be interested in science and technical subjects. Does the problem lie in wider socio-cultural changes, and the ways in which young people in the EU countries now live and wish to shape their lives? How can we ensure knowledge and skills in reasoning-teaching-learning & conceptual frameworks, critical perspectives & theories?
- Carnot Lille 2024 is an International Colloquium to provide a platform for young and senior researchers and specialists, including post-docs, Ph.D candidates, and teachers (from various disciplines) from all around the world, who will be welcomed from both academia and from the school system, to meet and share cutting-edge developments in the field.
- Carnot Lille 2024 aims to improve and innovate scientific, historical/literary/philological and other techniques of investigation of the science of the past, to make history of science and its foundations exciting for theoretical and experimental research.
- Carnot Lille 2024 also aims to create an opportunity for a creative dialogue and an exchange of experiences among representatives of different countries, including previous, new and prospective members of the European Union, as well as overseas communities. It will explore knowledge of the past as well as of present–day, methods, methodologies and theories.
Thematic Intent
- Generally speaking, implications & limits of this non-homogeneous framework for thinking about science and scientific practice can be explored. Therefore, the theme presents new insights and topics on Carnot, History of Physics/Mathematics (including History and Philosophy of science, Carnot as scientist) as well as on its research methodologies. The theme also deals with changes in human ideas over time within the history of human knowledge, thought and thinkers in certain cultures, lives and historical contexts.
- The historical–scientific research outcomes of this approach deepen our understanding of culture and, in consequence, they may help to integrate culture as a whole – such an approach enabled the creation of Scientific Archives, Museums, and the teaching of History of science in Higher Education on Carnot as a subject.
A Sample of Disciplinary Thematic Intent
- In 1824, thermodynamics was born by means of Sadi Carnot's Réflexions sur la puissance motrice du feu (hereafter Réflexions). Sadi Carnot (1796-1832) was one of the most important and ingenious scientists of the 19th century. His book, and last consideration with regard to the theory on gases appeared in quite a short period, ca. three years. In effect, it was an early scientific and filial project of father, Lazare and his son, Sadi. It was a total overturning of the Newtonian paradigm and related physics-mathematics relationship, which was a new theory, which had its origins in physical-engineering practices.
- The book encompasses the novelty of reversibility, for the first time the idea of a cycle in a physical theory, the limit to the efficiency of heat machines (excluding perpetual motion) a theorem demonstrated by an absurdum proof, and new gas laws, et al. Up to date, new historical insights will be discussed.
- His 1824-2024 anniversary is the best occasion: celebrating both Sadi Carnot as scientist and his Réflexions by means of selected essays in History of Physics, ranging across the entire field and related, in most instances to the work of Sadi Carnot; also discussing of Sadi Carnot's intellectual matrix and international heritage to encourage a new reflection on the interdisciplinary fields of history of physics and to highlight their own history and identity.
- This international Colloquium and its related Collection book (already contracted with Springer) will bring together cutting-edge writings by leading scholars in the History of Physics and related disciplines in regard to Sadi Carnot, focusing on his work. They will be an accessible avenue to providing an absorbing and revealing read for historians and scientists, particularly physicists and mathematicians alike [Cfr.: Gillispie CC, Pisano R (2014) Lazare and Sadi Carnot. A Scientific and Filial Relationship. 2nd ed. Springer; Pisano R, Cooppersmith J, Peacke M (2021) Essay on Machines in General (1786). Text, Translations and Commentaries. Lazare Carnot's Mechanics – Vol. 1. Springer; two more books on Lazare Carnot's Mechanics are pre-print]. Please follow this web-link
Research Design
- The production of historical/historiographical narratives and explanations are sometimes considered to be quite different epistemic objects than the results of the exact sciences. These attitudes are grounded in wide–spread scepticism about the possibility, scope, and reliability of historical findings.
Action
- Distinguished international scholars as well as early career and Ph.D students rethinking the role played by Carnot/History of science in current research and topics, methods/methodology/impact within these academic disciplines globally.
Quality & Transferring Knowledge, Supervising & Coordinating Committees
- The historians & scientists by working on manuscripts and editions, the knowledge, skills/abilities – for both the contents and subject colloquium management – will be systematically performed and transferred to young researchers of the historical communities.
The Impact & Benefits
- Historians, Scientists, Epistemologists/Philosophers, Ph.D students and Teachers in the field. The venue-North of France and its University will receive fruitful benefits in culture and historical initiatives and projects.
Innovative Task
- Since 1974 in Paris, we re-celebrate Sadi Carnot's thermodynamics. It will be under HOPAST-IEMN-LILLIAD-University of Lille. and its Partners.
Ambitiousness and Originality
- This International Colloquium represents an extraordinary opportunity to contribute to the role played by History of Science in France as well as its interplay with EU and overseas scholarly-communities.
Limitation
- No Limitation Concerning Age and Status/Position.
Encouraging
- We Strongly Encourage Participants from Ph.D Candidates at all Stages of their Research.
Measuring Gender Equality
- According to the UIS (UNESCO INSTITUTE FOR STATISTIC), ''data less than 30% of the world’s researchers are women''. In response, this Conference-project declares the initiative to consider women as very important agents–scholars for research and dissemination of science in culture.
